DjVu - image format optimized for storing scanned documents. In particular, it is ideal for creating electronic books. There are two common ways to store scanned books: enthusiast this recognition (OCR), followed by preparation of the full text of an electronic document, the less patient people spread directly 'scans' - the scanned images are often collected in a pdf document. In the first case. DjVu was initially developed by Yann LeCun, L on Bottou, Patrick Haffner, and Paul G. Howard at AT&T Labs from 1996 to 2001. It promises smaller files sizes than standard PDF's and is therefore perceived to be superior to PDF's primarily due to it's higher compression ratio.

DjVu is a web-centric format and software platform for distributing documents and images.DjVu can advantageously replace PDF, PS, TIFF, JPEG, and GIF fordistributing scanned documents, digital documents, or high-resolutionpictures. DjVu content downloads faster, displays and renders faster, looks nicer on a screen, and consume less client resources than competing formats. DjVu images display instantly and can be smoothly zoomed and panned with no lengthy re-rendering.DjVu is used by hundreds of academic, commercial, governmental, and non-commercial web sites around the world.

DjVu (pronounced 'déjà vu') a set of compression technologies,a file format, and a software platform for the delivery over the Web of digital documents, scanned documents, and high resolution images.

DjVu documents download and display extremely quickly, and look exactlythe same on all platforms with no compatibility problems due to fonts, colors, etc. DjVu can be seen as a superior alternative toPDF and PostScript for digital documents, to TIFF (and PDF) for scannedbitonal documents, to JPEG and JPEG2000 for photographs and pictures, and to GIF for large palettized images. DjVu is the only Web format that is practical for distributing high-resolution scanned documents in color. No other format comes close.

Typical DjVu file sizes are as follows:

Best free apps for macos

  • bitonal scanned documents: 5 to 30KB per page at 300dpi (3 to 10 times smaller than PDF or TIFF)
  • color scanned documents: 30 to 100KB per page at 300dpi (5 to 10 times smaller than JPEG).
  • photos: 2 times smaller than JPEG, about the same as JPEG-2000, but the decoder/renderer is progressive and has minimal memory requirements.
  • palettized images: 2 times smaller than GIF (up to 10 times if it's mostly text).
  • digital (non scanned) documents: between 1 and 3 times smaller than PDF or gzipped PS (depending on the amount of pictures), but rendering, page flipping, zooming, panning are incomparably faster, and the image quality on screen desplays is much better (antialiased text, etc).
More importantly, all DjVu images render very quickly and can be smoothly zoomed and panned.Pages of a document can be turned instantly, with no annoying delay.

DjVu is used by hundreds of academic, commercial, governmental, and non-commercial web sites around the world to distribute scanned documents, digital documents, and high-resolution photos.

Viewer

A short technical description of DjVu is available here.In short, DjVu is a multipage document format that can use a number of differentcoder/decoders (codecs) to compress the individual chunks that compose animages or a page. In fact, DjVu is really four compression techniques wrapped into one format:

Viewer
  • DjVuPhoto (aka IW44): A progressive, wavelet-based lossy compression format for continuous-tone images (i.e. photos and pictures).
  • DjVuBitonal (aka JB2): A lossless or lossy compression technique for bitonal (black & white) or palettized images that is particularly effective on images with repeated shapes (such as documents images where the same character appears many times in the document).
  • DjVuDocument: A technique for scanned color document that separates images into a foreground layer that contains the text and line drawings, and a background layer that contains the pictures and background textures. The foreground is encoded with DjVuBitonal and the Background with DjVuPhoto.
  • BZZ: A general-purpose data compression technique similar to bzip2. Bzz is used to compress searchable text layers and other metadata in DjVu documents.
DjVu can be seen as nicely complementing PNGand MNG (which, unlike DjVu are lossless formats) in the areas of documentimage compression and lossy photo compression. DjVuPhoto is a bit older, butsimilar in spirit to JPEG-2000. It is on a par with JPEG-2000 in terms ofimage quality and file size, but it compares favorably in terms of renderingtime and memory requirements. DjVuBitonal is better than MMR/GroupIV (used byPDF, TIFF, and most fax machines) by about a factor of 3 to 10. It is alsobetter than the emerging standard JBIG2 by about 20%.

Windows and Mac versions of the viewer/plug-in, free Windows compressors, and high-end commercial compressors and OCR engines are available from LizardTech Inc.The compressors provided here are slower, produce larger files (sometimeswith lower image quality) than the commercial compressors, but they do the job.

  • Full support for 4K & 5K monitors and beyond (perfect scaling, no tiny fonts!) - Full color management.
  • True full-screen mode (F10 key removes gadgets, F11 maximizes the view, F12 removes the taskbar: 100% full screen)
  • Sort by folder & file name, or by date, forward or reverse (F3 key)
  • Best delete functions in industry: Del key (to Recycle Bin or permanent), X-key to tag, then Ctrl+X to delete in batch.
  • Tag your photos (star rating) in one keystroke (1-5), filter by rating (F) and copy/move in batch (Ctrl+F)
  • While you evaluate an image, FastPictureViewer uses the native 64-bit power of your computer to prepare the next picture. When you are ready to move on, FastPictureViewer displays the next image instantly: no wait, not even a fraction of a second, when your computer has enough spare muscles to load two or more images at once.
We could go on and on with geek talk about DirectX and Direct2D hardware acceleration, speculative image loading, pixel shaders and so on, but all you need to know is there is no faster culling software, at any price.
FastPictureViewer Pro is the best companion to Adobe Lightroom and other digital asset management systems: use it to weed-out your pictures before importing them for development and editing. FPV Pro has all the tools you need to quickly decide if you want to keep an image or not: full color management for faithful color rendition, instant zooming to 100% and back, to check for sharpness, instant RGB histogram to evaluate the exposure, instant lost shadows / highlights view to see where the blocked-up shadows and burned-out highlights zones are located and their extent, and instant EXIF shooting data at a glance.

Consider the following example: say you are a wedding or sports photographer coming back from an assignment with 1000 raw images, taken with a contemporary DSLR (16-20MP range). Your first task is to review those images and select the ones deserving to be further processed. Let's assume you'll pick 10% of the images for processing and printing. You have a contemporary computer with a fast processor and fast disks (for example an Intel i7 machine, with one SSD and a fast SATA drive).
In this example, using FastPictureViewer Pro before Adobe Lightroom to weed-out the 90% of images that you are not going to process right away makes you save about 50 minutes on a 1000 images job. The majority of the saving comes from not importing all images in Lightroom and wait, then delete or set aside the one you don't want. Delete or set aside in FastPictureViewer Pro, then import only the images you intend to keep or process right away into Lightroom.

(*) Average time to import 1000 raw images of about 16-20MP each, and create 1:1 previews for each of them, on an i7-class computer with SSD and SATA discs.
(**) The time spent evaluating an image does not influence the time difference: if it takes you 5 or 10 second to evaluate an image then the total times will of course be much longer, but the time saved stays the the same.
(***) FastPictureViewer Pro preloads images directly in video memory in GPU-accelerated mode and use the graphic processor to speed up operations such as zooming, panning, black & white preview and lost shadow/highlight spotting.

In practice the time saving can be even greater, thanks to the very efficient and speedy operations of FastPictureViewer, which virtually never makes you wait: for example the rating feature, where you give one to five stars to an image or assign it a color label, is instantaneous. If you use the single-click file copy function, you'll find that the program performs the copy operations in background without making you wait, effectively making the file copy appear instant. Everything in FastPictureViewer was designed for speed and efficiency!

The ratings, captions, keywords and color labels set in FastPictureViewer Professional will be readily imported into Adobe Lightroom and other DAM software, thanks to the industry-standard Adobe XMP metadata standards those programs adhere to, making FastPictureViewer Pro the perfect time-saving front-end companion to Adobe Lightroom and other DAM's image development and picture organization features!
